I think one of the major difference is that Media edition uses a so-called "10 foot UI". The windows, fonts, etc. are scaled larger so that one can easily read the screen from further away, say, sitting on your living room couch. ;-> I'm also recalling that Media edition lacks some of the networking functionality of XP, but I could be wrong on that point.

that 10 foot thing isn't all the time. It's when you activate a media center 'mode' that lets you go through menus on a remote to get to my pictures and my videos and my music. as far as networking, i can't remember offhand what the limitations are... i know it does do remote desktop, but i don't know what else... surely one of the helpful people around here can let you know

From what I have read is this.
XP MCE = XP Pro w/o the ability to access domains and some other XP Pro features + some extra Media features.
I think you should be able some of your media features via a remote ontrol that you can purchase for use with XP MCE as well.
I have heard that there are "hacks" that you can find in the net to actually enable soem of the XP Pro features with XP MCE.

Also, it seems that XP MCE 2005 w/ Update Rollup 2 is the VERY last version of XP MCE.
Windows Vista is suppose to incorporate many of the XP MCE features in itself is why the work on XP MCE is finalized.

At least that is the jist of what I have read and why I chose to buy XP MCE for my laptop so I can use a remote to control its Media features :D

Also, AFAIK the XP MCE that you can buy aftermarket is ONLY available OEM.
