The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

The knowledgeable guy on that forum told the other posters that packet sniffers wouldn't work. In order to determine the IP of a host on the internet, you need to be receiving packets directly from him, thus the whole direct connect deal with AIM. If you are just chatting without d.c., you are routing all of your data packets to a series of AOL servers which then forward them to their destination. Even if you know the guy's IP address, there's not much you can tell unless he's registered his own domain. Hacking the computer is a whole separate issue, and may not be possible unless you've gotten him to download some of your "special" software and opened up a port or two. That, or you discover some new security vulnerability in his OS.
