    does xp use both cores with a amd cpu

    i installed xp on my hp laptop one time and i notice that it only used one core. i did read about this problem and there was a fix of sorts but i dont think it was official from ms.

    so im just wondering with xp sp3 or wot service pack would i need in order for xp to use both cores with amd cpus.

    You can check by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to the performance tab and check there are two charts for CPUs.

    If there aren't download a hotfix or some sort of AMD driver to fix it.

    i did download a fix at one time,it was supposed to be anyway,but i just thought with xp and sp3 they would have intergrated a fix for amx cpus or something.thanks anyway

    There was, a long, long time ago, an issue with XP not using both processors on certain dual-core AMD chips; however, a hotfix was released, and that hotfix was incorporated into SP3, so if you've installed SP3, you have nothing to worry about (at least in terms of both cores not being fully utilized).

    Actually the AMD Processor Driver activates AMD Quiet & Cool functionality in Windows Xp since it wasn't included in Windows Xp when it was released.
    There is another Dual Core Optimizer also on AMD Site.
    Although they said it is included in Vista but the Program was updated to install on Vista so it could mean it isn't part of Vista.
