well i have a older dell vostro and it has xp on it. i was planning on upgrading to w7 but i was wondering how do you get the drivers? the drivers that came with it are only for xp and the drivers on the dell website is only for vista and xp.

does w7 automatically install drivers? or is there another way i dont know.

msft says that you need 1gz of cpu, 1 gb of ram (2 gb+ is significantly better) and 16 Gb of disk along with a reasonably well accelerated video chip.

A few people have installed win7 to 'smaller' machines with varying degrees of success.

win7, like every one of their releases since win95, will auto-install drivers *if* they are available on the DVD. You might want to do some advance research to see if the disk controller on your machine has win7 drivers available and if so, make up what is called an F6 floppy driver disk just in case.

Details are available all over nbr and the web.

I think that in your case, the easiest way would be to just try and boot a Win7 install disk. If you get to the point where the installer looks at the hard drive you are all set.
