dvd shrink should rip it to an audio and video folder thats not copy protected...check your settings tab but dvd shrink nevers gives me trouble with protection
just rip it to your drive to audio and video ts folders and when you want ot watch ... well this parts for intervideo at least...just target the video ts folder as the file you want to "watch" and it will play just like a standard dvd with menus and the works -
Yes and no.
DVD Decrypter used to be the thing I used to do it, however I gather they have been forced to cease and decist because people making legal copies of there own DVD's for backup purposes is of course not what the movie companies want.
So anyway, if you can find a copy of DVD Decrypter to use, that works just great (at least it has for everything I've used it to copy a DVD so I can watch it on my PSP without buying the same movie over for 40 dollars to watch on one device (rant)) otherwise I think you are probably mostly out of luck because almost every program that does this is now considered illegal. -
DVD Decrypter is still available on P2P. Make sure you get the latest version 3.5.4. Some newer DVDs have newer protections which older versions are not able to circumvent. If you rip in ifo mode, it will take just the movie and not the extra to save space.

If you want to backup the whole DVD, use DVD Decrypt and DVD Shrink. If you just want the movie, you can use FairUse. It rips it in DivX or XVid format so that it saves space. You don't get the menues or chapters, but it's great to save space. The quality of the rip is excellent, as well. I've never had audio/video sync issues.
I never keep complete DVDs on my harddrive. To me, the bonus features and quality aren't enough of a reason to waste 4GB of space when all I want is the movie, which can be stored in a 700MB AVI with decent quality.
Here is a step-by-step guide to ripping DVDs with DivX or XVid, if you are interested.
If you want all of the DVD features, you should stick with DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. You could always try RatDVD, but I don't really care for that option. -
There is a program called "No. 1 DVD Ripper". It can create .AVI files that are a little over a gig for an entire movie. Look for it!

kk..thanks...and it'll work for copy-protected dvds too??...i dont care about the chapters if that is the case -
Yeah, it works fine with copy protected movies. I've ripped many movies with it. Freaky Friday, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Life Aquatic, Spiderman 2, Gone in 60 Seconds, Dodgeball; they all worked flawlessly.
Good luck! -
ok...thanks a lot!!!!!

DVD Shrink uses older decrypting tools and is beginning to not work on newer movies, you will have much better luck with Alcohol 120%
dvd back-up...
