ok it seems my brand new notebook isn't any faster in dvd decrypter than my aging desktop. I am a bit supriesed at this. I would have thought an intel T2400 with 1 Gb of ddr2 5300 would be faster at this stuff than my old AMD 64 3200 with 2GB of ddr400. total CPU usage on the T2400 is usually between 3-8% with very little memory usage while decrypting. I don't have my desktop in front of me but I think am sure it had more CPU usage, although its expected as its a single core. my average times with the T2400 last night was about 9-11 mineuts. am very sure thats about the same time as my AMD. why would it be be almost the same? I thought it was that maybe my destop had a dvd drive with 8Mb of catch but I checked and it only has the standard 2Mb. maybe i am just thinking wrong about the AMD and its actually slower then I remember. I don't know.

You also have to consider other things that make a desktop faster than a laptop. For one hard drive, 7200RPM vs 5400RPM. Also, the DVD drive read times might be faster on the desktop than the laptop. I think you lappy may be a little faster, but like I said, desktops will generally have less bottlenecks.

hmmm good point. didn't think about that. 2 7200rpm drives in raid 0 vs 1 5200 rpm drive would make a good diffrence I guess.

Also, remember decryptor really doesn't do anything, it just pulls data off a DVD, that's fairly dependant on the DVD drive speed, not processor or CPU or...

If you want to see the effect that your processor has, you could try this experiment.

First rip the DVD with DVDFab Decrypter to your hard drive on both computers (this will take the DVD drive out of the equation). Then use DVD Shrink on the files to shrink it down to 4.7GB. After DVD Shrink has completed, it will give you the total time it took for the task. I'll bet your Dual Core will whip the AMD.

I can't find the exact numbers right now but the experiment I did with the Incredibles DVD gave these numbers:

    Pentium 4 2.0GHz /768MB RAM 18m 9s
    T2300e Dual Core /512MB RAM approx 9m 40s
