    i think i messed something up with the partitioning part of a clean install so now my dvd drive is listed as e: is there a way i can have it listed as d: ?

    Assuming that you are on Windows XP:

    Start -> Run -> compmgmt.msc (to start the Computer Management console)

    Go to Storage -> Disk Management. Find your DVD Drive, rightclick it, select Change Drive Letter and Paths and see if you can assign D: to it.

    Well, it sounds like you have two partitions - one is your C:\ drive and the other is D. Then that means that your optical drive is E:\. I have one of my other computer's hard drives in two partitions - that is how it looks.

    Yeah, try Dr.'s advice.

    Of course, if you do have two partitions, then it's best to leave it as it is, with the HD partitions coming first, then the optical drive.

    And it really doesn't matter anyway, unless you're offended by the letter E, in which case you can pick anything else you want later in the alphabet. My personal favorite is Q.

    thanks everyone. it worked out and i do have two partitions but the other is only the dell diagnostics partition so thats not visible in my computer.
