I'm pretty new to the mp3 player stuff...just bought a 1/2 gig mp3 player. I found that XP Media edition makes the transfer very easy. It's not direct, at least as far as I can see, but XP media can copy the DVD directly to your HD, automatically converting to mp3 format, and then resulting music files can be copied to mp3/ipod via usb. I like the idea of copying first to the HD so I can keep a library of translated music file for later use.

dvd movies cannot be converted to mp3. Movie files cannot be made into music mp3 files.

iPod Video is an annoying video format, but you can convert dvds to it. It will require off the top of my head 3 (free) programs, though there may be one program that does it all.

the first that you'll need is DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your hard drive
the second program is an avi converter such as a Auto Gordian Knot.
the third is an AVI to iPod Video format converter

I cannot go into all the details of using these programs but you can easily google search how to turn DVDs into AVI and then google AVI to iPod Video tutorials. It's a processor intensive, long process if you want to maximize the quality of the video and audio for you iPod compared to the size of the file, so be warned.

You could also just download the movies in AVI then get the converter program :D

I know of CloneDVD Mobile. Although it is not free, I've had great experience with other products by SlySoft. I haven't tried CloneDVD mobile though.

It's not free, but I've used the ImTOO DVD To iPod Converter with great success. It's at http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-to-ipod-converter.html

Actually, I use the ImToo DVD Ripper Platinum, which is basically the same except it rips to many different formats, not just iPod/mp4. I mostly convert episodic DVD's (like TV series') or music dvd's for viewing on an iPaq Pocket PC.

Works great. I use it all the time.
