I recently purchased a new computer (MSI GT735) and also got an eSATA/USB external enclosure so I could transfer files from the drive in my old notebook. The enclosure is a Coolmax HD 250YL from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159093
I have yet to have the enclosure connect with Vista in eSATA or USB mode. I am using the USB and eSATA cables together for proper power and the power light for the enclosure comes on. Also if I leave the enclosure plugged in for eSATA mode I cannot boot. Don't know if that is related but I found it rather odd.
Both Vista and eSATA are new to me so undoubtedly I have done something stupid. Hopefully, I get a bit of a laugh out of finding the answer. I could use one today.

Are you getting any informational, warning, or error items being logged in your event logs?

I don't think I have any warnings but I don't know where to look for the log on Vista. I get nothing when I plug it in to my computer. The light turns on and the drive spins up but I don't get any pop up messages or any any indication that the enclosure has been plugged in. I cannot detect it using "add hardware". Where under the device manager would I find info on the eSATA port/controller? Perhaps it is not turned on?
UPDATE: Was finally able to connect on a different PC (USB mode on XP). Was detected immediately without a problem or need for a driver. -
You should check with the manufacturer's support website to see if there are any issues with _Vista, such as a possible driver update.

I am a bit confused here...
Assuming that you have Vista SP2, does USB work under Vista?
When you plug the eSATA cable the device need power.. based on just the screen shot is instead of having a power plug like most eSATA enclosures I suspect it uses the USB. Did you try attaching both? How about the USB port a different USB paired plug (other side of laptop for example).
Also, make sure that SATA mode is set to AHCI (not SATA, nor IRRT, nor PATA, nor ATA). This option is found in the BIOS.
