    error checking

    are there any good software that checks hard disks for errors?
    maybe perform a diskcheck like the one that comes with windows.

    What is wrong with the one that comes with windows? Norton Disk Doctor is an alternative. I dont think it is better then windows checkdisk (chkdsk).

    Western Digital Data Lifeguard is a good one. Some drives may not work with it.

    In that case, use Seagate's Seatools. Both utilities have the option of creating bootable ISO's so that you can run them outside of Windows.

    It may help to check what type of drive you have. Edit: they are both free :)
