I'm running xp pro on my macbook and was curious what the different power settings do exactly. There are a lot of them when i left click the battery icon.
home/office desk
portable/laptop
presentation
always on
minimal power management
max battery

They're just preset template type things for all the power settings; if you pick one it will change all the power options to how they're defined in that power scheme; like the idle time it takes to automatically standby, hibernate, etc. You can change them and look at the specific settings by going to the power options from the control panel, or right-click the battery icon and click adjust power properties.

Well... this is going to sound incredibly stupid but uh... when you're at your desk, apply the desk profile. When you're on the go, apply the portable profile... etc..
Basically, they adjust certain settings to adapt to your needs. For instance, Maximum battery life will lower the brightness level, turn off the screen sooner, go into standby after 5 min of idle, etc. While the Maximum performance will do just the opposite.
These are all settings you can manually change of course.

Set one of them, then look at your power options - thats the best way to see what they do.
