    firewall software.. what to use . info

    i do not currently have a firewall ..

    i was thinking about just downloading the free ZONEALARM firewall ..

    what does everyone think ..

    also a couple questions about firewalls..

    1. does it make the computer come to a snails speed

    2. will programs conflict ?

    3. does it screw up wireless networks .. ?

    for anyone with zonealarm.. are you able to turn it on and off ?

    ZoneAlarm is by far the most popular personal firewall. I've used it before and it doesn't cause any of teh problems you're worried about, and yes, you can turn it off. I no longer use a firewall, just because I'm not too worried about it, but this product is solid. Computer Associates also offers a free firewall and AV software through MSFT's site, but you have to dig to find it.

    My favorite one is Sygate Personal firewall.
    It's free and has more advanced options you can configure in your advanced rules.

    With out a doubt if this is for use in your home a hardware firewall is the best! Usally people just buy a router that has one built in (Most do have one built in) If you use a hardware version it takes up no system resources and will not slow your internet connection. Hardware firewalls also require litttle to no set up. The only time to get a software firewall is if you will be using broadband internet a lot away from home then its something to think about. If you are a dial up user its probably nothing you should worry about unless you have extra money to spend.

    I had the free ZoneAlarm and now use the free Sygate.
    I like sygate better.
    I also have a router firewall.

    I' using ZoneAlarm for a long time + router firewall. Looks good to me.
