I am looking for a free email program like outlook but that runs faster, blocks out more spam and is overall better. I use firefox and was going to try thunderbird but I guess I want some feedback on some other programs that might be better...

What is best is what works well for you. I suggest that you try the various clients and see which one that might be. FWIW, ThunderBird is my preference.

Are you talking about POP? If so, then yes, you can set up gmail to accept emails from other email providers like Hotmail and Yahoo and such.

In addition to SunBird, there is also Lightning. Lightning uses SunBird as a code base, but integrates the calendar into Thunderbird. It's a Thunderbird extension, really.

Pegasus Mail is a good POP3/IMAP email program. www.pmail.com it's free has very good filtering options, multiple accounts etc etc.. I'm not entirely sure how it runs on Vista as I haven't tried it since I upgraded due to ditching my domains and email server and just using webmail instead.

    Thunderbird works.

I have two gmail accounts and three yahoo accounts on it.

In order to use a yahoo email account in Thunderbird (or outlook) you must use a small free program called YPops.

I know for sure Windows Mail works... I haven't experienced any problems with Thunderbird either.

i have to say, i'm MIGHTY impressed with the quality of Windows Live Mail on Vista. it's very well designed and just plain works well with a host of mail servers/addresses (configured up my gmail, ISP and hotmail settings automatically).

Is there any chance of Microsoft charging for Windows Live Mail after it goes out of beta?

    Because that would suck.

not at all, it's a replacement for Windows Mail, which itself was a replacement for Outlook Express. in other words, it's free :)

The problem with it is that MS stripped out http mail support from it, making it less useful to me than the former Outlook Express.

Another vote for Thunderbird + Lightening. It is more stable than Outlook and it does everything that I want Outlook to do, except to synch with my PDA (but that will come in time I hope). But using the "Provider" extension on Lightening, you can have it synch with you Google calendar. It's great.

I use Gmail.com and access my email from Mozilla Thunderbird. Excellent combination. Also all your emails get backed up to your online space of almost 3 gigs now provided by Google. And gmail acts as a spam filter before it gets to your Thunderbird inbox.
