gadgets won't load on boot, nor can be loaded. sidebar exe can't be manualy started form it's folder.

Change UAC and Gadgets in control panel do nothing at all as if they were not clicked.

I know my answer is not what you want to hear but I could never get the weather sidebar gadget to work ever in my wife's vista computer. Tried several to no avail.

Lots of news lately about some gadgets harboring malware and virus's so maybe that could be your problem, but who knows?

^^^^^^^^^^ GR8 suggestion you may want to run a scan to rule out malware
    1. Try creating a new user account and login with it to see if UAC and gadgets work
    2. Did you try the suggestion to run sfc /scannow ?
    3. When you tried to start sidebar.exe was it located here? C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-sidebar_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_2d02b12c3d47a517 and was it 1.41 MB ?
