I also keep my desktop clean. Hate having lot of shortcuts ;)
I use Vista start menu search feature to launch applications. Press Win key and type the first few letters of the application, then hit enter. Very quick. Just an idea....

I use Launchy and am impressed. SlickRun is a similar alternative that seems to be popular.

Put your icons into a folder on the desktop and drag that folder to an unused edge of your screen. Instant toolbar. At least in XP. They probably screwed that up in Vista too.

The built in toolbar is, well, built in and I doubt it uses much in the way of 'resources'. I've been using them for years.

Thats a great option. Alternative could be to put your most used applications/programs in the quick launch toolbar. I have a clean desktop, with no icons on it. I just launch applications/programs from the quick launch right next to the Vista Orb (Start), otherwise, quick search with Vista Search.

It just does. Drag a folder to the screen edge, and Bob's your Uncle! instant tool bar.

I just create special folders (e.g.: Tools; Apps; Folders; Web; Photo; Utilities) under a "Toolbars" folder under my user directory, populate these special folders with the shortcuts I want, then create toolbars for each of these folders. I turn of the Show Text and Show Title options for each toolbar and then lock the toolbar. No icons on the desktop at all. Not even the recycle bin anymore. Just three sidebar gadgets. More ...
