I have Chrome, Picasa and Google Earth which I seldom use. Is it possible to delete google update and just check manually from time to time?

Check your add/remove programs list.
There might be a program similar to "Google Update". -
Nope not in there but according to CFP it just did an update and constantly runs in processes.
-
I just disabled it in start up, we'll see what happens.

Also when you install a google program or something similar like firefox or apple quicktime it will ask you a question during the installation whether you want it to automatically connect to the internet for updates or not.
But usually this can be turned off somewhere in the program or while it's updating, it will give you the option to turn off AU. -
You should also check your task scheduler too.
