I tried to install HP help and support program some time ago, but got an error message. Basically, VISTA doesn't know what to do with the .msi file? ***? This never happened before, and I don't know what I did to cause this.

I tried to install "windows installer" via windows.com but it's a .msu file and VISTA doesn't know what do with that either.

Can I just pop in a vista CD and repair windows? Or do I have to re-install everything? This sucks!

i think your vista has losts its association for .msu files ( Hotfix files)

here are some simple steps to restore it

Firstly you need to click ‘Select a program from a list of installed programs’ and press OK. The following prompt will then appear.

From here, just select ‘Browse’ and then press OK. Also make sure the ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’ is ticked.

Now browse into your ‘Windows\System32\’ directory and look for the file ‘wusa.exe’, select it and click OPEN.

Now the Windows Update Standalone Installer will be an option within your Open With dialog. Make sure it is selected and press okay.

Thats it, now your .msu packages should be working again as normal.

ok, looks like CC Cleaner has been messing the registry. Because I reinstalled vista, and everything worked fine. Than, I intsalled CC cleaner and it happened again.

I don't know why this is happening now but CC Cleaners works fine on XP.

Re-installed vista and stopped running CC registry cleaner and everything is all good now.

Don't know why CC Cleaner is messing up the file associations. I tried to manually set the assocation but still got the error message so I just ran a clean install of vista.

Always make a backup of your registry if you use CCeaner and date them. KEEP THEM, they don't take up any space and if something like .msi and .msu get screwed up you really don't know how long its been like that, because who knows how rarely you use that format. I can not emphasis on, if you screw with the registry, BACK UP A COPY OF THEY ORIGINAL!
