    does anyone know of free hard drive recovery software so i can try recover data and pic of a hard drive

    I had the same problem, searched high and low a few months ago. Ended up pay some dollars for a piece of software that worked. I cant remember the name but will have a look.

    What happened to the data? If it was deleted, how long ago? If it's just a problem of corruption, there is a possibility of recovery by just hooking it up as a slave and browsing (assuming it can be read). Understand that a defective drive can get worse if reading/writing is continued.

    Physical (clean room) data recovery can be very expensive. But, if it's just a matter of data that was deleted recently (and not overwritten), you may be able to suffice with undelete software.
