I use about 20 gigs of information at most on my laptop. but my comuter says that im using 59 gigs. i went to defrag and it said this

    Volume fragmentation
    Total fragmentation = 23 %
    File fragmentation = 45 %
    Free space fragmentation = 1 %

    File fragmentation
    Total files = 99,514
Average file size = 603 KB
    Total fragmented files = 44
    Total excess fragments = 57,995
Average fragments per file = 1.58

    Pagefile fragmentation
    Pagefile size = 1.50 GB
    Total fragments = 1

    Folder fragmentation
    Total folders = 7,234
    Fragmented folders = 1
    Excess folder fragments = 0

    Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 129 MB
    MFT record count = 107,245
    Percent MFT in use = 80 %
    Total MFT fragments = 3

Aside from needing a fragmentation, what do you see that's wrong with the information? I don't see anything of consequence.

The ms defragger program cannot defrag certan files, and it happens to be a large amont of files. I do not know how to undefrag these files, later ill will post the info it says on what it cannot defrag.

    thanks

While logged into Windows, no defragger will be able to defrag the MFT. The paging file is also typically left out of these defragments. Boot-time defragmenting would be the best course of action. You could try booting to the command prompt and defragging from there...I think that would work.

Otherwise, programs like Diskeeper and Perfect Disk are much nicer defragmenters than the built-in windows defrag. If you need a free program, I have heard good things about O&O Defrag. I haven't used that one though.

Defragmenting isn't likely to help. I'm interpreting the above statment as "you have files totaling 20G in actual size taking up 59G of hard drive space" This has more to do with cluster size. See the following

    http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/data_takes_more_space.html

    for an explanantion.

The only way to fix this is to redefine the cluster size on your hard drive to something smaller, which means either reformatting your hard drive and choosing a more appropriate cluster size that fits the average size of your files or using a third party partition manager to change the cluster size of your current partitions.

I think it would be helpful if you posted actual information regarding the files on your computer. When you say there's 59gb taken up, where are you seeing this, and how do you know it's not true?

Chemistry is right about this, defragging will not fix incorrect hd free space reporting.

If you're sure it's an error it could also be related to a virus infection, or another bug of some kind. Have you done a scan for these recently?

Application Data is a hidden system folder. You're not supposed to be able to delete it. Lots of programs store various files in there. If you know there's garbage in some of the subfolders, you probably can delete those, though.
