Every hour or two windows 7 makes the hardware disconnect sound, when I haven't unplugged anything. For the time being I've disabled the hardware disconnect audio file, but I would like to get to the bottom of this, with some help.

    Thanks!

This should be in the Windows 7 subforum. Maybe a moderator could move it?

Have you checked to see if it's something like Bluetooth or Wireless? When I switch off my Wi-Fi it makes the noise. Does everything still work properly after it's being disconnected?

Same happens on a Vaio SZ on Windows Vista.

I don't think it was ever positively identified.

Maybe if you can try to log hardware you may be able to figure out what it is.

Let me get this straight. Are you referring to the sound which occurs when you remove a USB cable from the computer? I had this problem on my Vista computer a long time ago. Somehow it just disappeared one day. Don't really know how.

Yes, I am referring to the sound windows makes when I remove a usb cable from the computer. I also had this problem with vista, but after 2 weeks I just went away. I've been having this problem on W7 for a while now.

I'm pretty sure its not bluetooth because I've disabled it, and its not wireless because my internet still works (wireless is my only connection). Everything still works properly, which is why its been so difficult to figure out.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

A friend of mine had this same problem in win7.

I had him install chipset drivers so the hard drive could be recognizes as SATA and not PATA. The problem disappeared.

    This somehow sounds wrong.

How can SATA be recognized as PATA and work?? ...

Hmm, maybe I did not remember it right. Maybe it was recognised as something else, but definitely not SATA. And it was even shown in Safely Remove Hardware. Having installed the driver for chipset the sounds stopped and the HDD disappeared from Safely Remove Hardware too.

    Try it.

Well, for me my HDD isn't listed amongst "safely remove hardware".

Personally I just put up with it on Vista... its not even regular...
And I'm wary of breaking some Sony utility...

Intel's X3100 driver makes my Intel X3100 overheat for example... :(

Have you installed the chipset driver as I advised you?

No - also I can have no disconnect sound one day, and have one the next...

I think there may be a chipset driver on the Sony site...

But people tried to track it down in the Sony forum for the SZ - and never found a conclusive answer.

And as I said - I had a bad experince with the graphics driver - and being a Sony... some things are strange... for example a library for Fn keys...

I personally am not too annoyed by this either.

Its rather the OP ;) :)

I do not want to be rude, but why do you even post it on the forum if you do not intend to follow any advice?
