do these things actually work to speed up vista performance. has anyone ever tried one?

I've been using Yamicsofts VistaManager, and have been very happy with it. It's not free.
The important point is that none of these programs are a magic bullet. They are basically a central location with a pretty GUI where you can access settings that aren't available (usually) without editing the registry or visiting various applets in the control panel. -
