You'll need to partition space away from vista, then install XP on that partition.

thats a nice ref guide and lots of us dual boot vista and xp or ubuntu. Vista will be the c: partition
for xp, make the xp partition about 10gb, so you can add programs etc. Also, I would recommend a 3rd party partition manager like acronis, paragon or cute(freeware)--> they are just easier to use with more options and all are compatible w/ vista. you can google for them or pm me and i'll give you some good information
the 3rd suggestion is to use easybcd for booting.
EasyBCD Link
That way you don't have to edit the boot information, etc. You will still have to repair vista as shown in that guide. After you get it set up with easy bcd, you can install ireboot which sits in your sys tray. That way, you can select head of time what os you want to boot into, without waiting for the splash screen and boot options. easybcd has it's own forum so you can get lots of help w/ any booting questions. Easy also works w/ linux, whcih makes it real handy. just google for easybcd and after you hve it installed, it has a link to ireboot.

If you have the space, I think you should give XP at least 20 gigs.

InnoTech virtual box is great.
