I am trying to replace vista rc1 on one of my computers with a free copy of vista business that I can download from my school. It is free if i download it from the website but it is an .iso file and I cannot open it. Is there some free program that can help me open it to install it? Right now I am trying to download it on my other computer...then burn it to dvd...then run it in the computer that needs it. will this work? any advice is greatly appreciated.

Burn it onto a DVD using Alcohol 120% or Nero under options Back Up > Burn Image to Disk. Just simply burning the .iso file onto a DVD will not do the trick. You'd have to use one of the listed or similar methods as above.

Back Up > Burn Image to Disc

Then, select the appropriate .iso file. Let the burner do its thing, then you have a bonafide Vista Business DVD. Stick it into any computer and it'll work fine.

To save you the trouble of burning disks in the future, I suggest you use Daemon Tools, which allows you to "mount" CD images. But for the purposes of installing a new OS, you still need a physical disk and Daemon Tools would not work.

i tried this and the burned dvd just shows up with the file just as if it was saved on my drive. it will not load like a typical windows disc.

    i went...

    backup
    burn image to disc
    selected my file
and then this keeps popping up....foreign image file....."the entered block size doesn not correspond to the image length. do you want to correct the value?

You cannot just burn the file to the disc, in such a way you can just see the ISO file. The ISO file is an image of a disc, and a tool like Nero takes that image and writes it to the disc so it looks like the original disc whose 'picture' was taken.

Is the school doing that legally? I doubt it. I use Roxio and it automatically recognises the file is an image and prompts me.

maybe it's corrupt. either you burned a coaster or the iso got corrupt during downloading.

Yeah. Iv burned many Vista discs since I keep misplacing them. My school offers free Vista business via ISO and I just use Nero to burn the image. Works pretty well.

so just save it to my desktop when downloading the iso? im thinking that because it did not work because i downloaded it on the computer that needs it. then downloaded it on my computer to try and burn it to disk. downloading it twice from different computer caused it not to work.

my school also offers it for $17 so i might do that. it says media before the price though. is there anything different about it from a regular copy then?
