    Hi.
There i come again with nother weird problem i have been facing and have made Dell do rounds at my place.

it all started with Dell replacing my Motherboard and heatsink for heating problems. my hibernation stopped working after i close the lid, it works perfectly once i select "hibernation" from the start menu.

i contacted Dell, they did some remote desktop, searched and did some settings change. but it did not work. they made me even do clean reinstalling the OS, it did not work.. they even sent me a fresh motherboard replacement and the problem remains same.

2 motherboard replacement and one OS re install and the laptop does not seems to be going into hibernate.

i have crossed check every bits i knew, same people from dell did. i am still to hear from them today to figure what could be done.

any solution / suggestion you guys might have?

    thanks .

Since hibernate is clearly enabled (you are able to hibernate using the Start Menu), check your power options to ensure the system is configured to hibernate when closing the lid.

Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Power buttons and lid > Lid close action

Assuming this is what Dell configured via remote desktop, it seems like a hardware problem. Perhaps something was damaged or left unconnected during the first mainboard replacement?

Thanks for the reply lbohn, but as you said..dell did that with remote desktop stuff and then they made me do the exact same thing some 100 times for no good..
even i have started wondering if the engineer who replaced the motherboard, has ripped off some part which enable hibernating when closing the lid.. but somehow these guys at tech support know only one thing about fixing any problem - replace the motherboard .

hoping for another call from them.
    regards.

What happens if you set the "Lid Close Action" above to "Sleep (Standby)" or "Shut down". Do those functions work? Surely it couldn't be as simple as a defective lid closed sensor.

why would you say something like "ripped off the part"??

Do you think that service engineers are willing to put their jobs at risk for a 5 cent part just to specifically hack you off?

There's usually switch/sensor near the hinge, from the switch there's a cable to the motherboard. Possible break points are both those and the motherboard plug in the cable.

If one of those is broken during the motherboard replacement, I sure hope it is just an accident. Such is just waiting to happen and usually tech doing the replacement notices it and orders replacement parts asap. Unfortunately some of those go unnoticed.

hey newsposter, calm down bro.. i did not mean that..was a typo now i see it.. lol.. i understand no one would do this kinda stuff, since the engineer kept calling me to know the update from Dell.. lol..

Thanks KLF, :) seems like i got to tell these buggers at Dell what could the problem be.;.
do you guys think it would be smart of me of asking for a "brand new laptop" for *damaging* my laptop so much..?? (some4-5 motherboard, two heatsinks, a LCD and keyboard replacement over these one n a half year :/ ) :)
just a thought crossed me.. he he

:) back to the round one deeastman.. :) i selected "shutdown" option when close the lid.. did not work out..i closed the lid open after good few minutes to see youtube had streamed my Floyd playlist :)

    any suggestion ..

although i had dropped my complain on Dell FB page too..but each time they make me talk to some nice fellow who arranges for another replacement :)

Well that pretty much narrows the problem down. If you have had a couple of motherboard replacements then the problem would seem to be as KLF indicated, a bad lid sensor or cable. How you proceed to get it fixed is in your corner. At least you can tell Dell that your laptop cannot sense when the lid is closed. You have made progress toward resolution.

That's more operations than Joan Collins has in same time :p

4-5 motherboard replacements, no wonder if the cable actually did break when it has been pulled around so many times.

yeah man.. lets see wht those guys at Dell end got to tell me tomorrow. I personally like their FB page, u drop one post on their wall and the next day you get a call from them :) much better than waiting endlessly for someone to pick up ur call on the hotline :|

:p lol.. but you still has not answered my query KLF ..would it be smart of me for asking for a laptop replacement :p hehehe

    thanks you guys,
