    Hi,

I have a new HP Pavilion dv6226us (excellent buy).

Everything is fine except it wakes up <1min after I tell it to
hibernate (either closing the lid or Start>Hibernate).

I tried "powercfg -H ON" (w/o quotes) from an "elevated" cmd prompt, but
    that didn't work.

Does anyone have an answer to why it may have stopped hibernating and a fix???

    Thanks for the help!
    Cal :)

Do you have hibernate enabled in control panel power options? Usually that is the first place to check to make sure it is enabled before you start checking for other reasons.

Yes, I set it to hibernate when I first got it a few weeks ago....it stopped
    working a few days ago.

Is the computer actually properly hibernating - do you see the progress bar on the display as it writes to the HDD?

Sometimes this type of problem can be cleared by disabling hibernation and then deleting the hiberfile.sys file from the HDD (if not automatically deleted) then rebooting and re-enabling hibernation.

    Thanks, John.

I'm using Vista Home Premium, and it's a bit more difficult to find things.
I did a search of C drive without results.....then I looked in Windows, System32, and don't see it....do you know the path?

I like Vista so far, but not as fluent with it yet as I was with XP!

.....just found it! (hiberfil.sys) ...... 1.99gb! Are you sure I can nuke it???

    Hi DF,

thanks for the link.....I used the "powercfg /hibernate on" (without the period after "on" per the instructions:

"At the command prompt, type powercfg /hibernate on."

.....shut the lid.....it hibernated <1min & woke up as before.....re-booted,
    tried again....same thing.

I haven't tried to delete the hiberfil.sys yet as John suggested.
Just wanted to verify it's ok first. I thought the powerfil.sys would
    be a text file.

Hiberfil.sys should automatically disappear if you disable hibernation in the power properties then re-appear when you re-enable hibernation in the power properties, so you only need to manually delete it if it doesn't automatically disappear.

The other possibility is that somehow, you have got something enabled which is allowed to wake up the computer. The next test would therefore be to pull out any network cable before hibernating (I know that my lights on my network port are live, even if the computer is hibernating). Also check if the problem occurs on obth mains and battery power.

Vista wouldn't let me delete hiberfil.sys even though I'd changed the power settings to shutting off when closing the lid, but it evidently auto deleted later as I couldn't find it with search.

I re-enabled hibernate, and it still wakes up, so I guess there's a program waking it up....I use only wireless networks, and am on battery most of the time.

This happened with my last HP....I don't know if HP is part of it. It's mostly
a convience and time saver, and annoying not to have it work properly.

I first realized there was a problem when I closed the lid, put it in it's case, and took it to work only to find it hot when I got there! I hate to think of the
torque it put on the HD!

Maybe it's safest just to shut it off rather than depending on hibernate,
    especially for a laptop.

But thanks John for the good ideas and suggestions! I welcome any & all.

    Cal

I would suggest going through the properties of your devices and making sure than none are enabled to wake your computer. See the attached example. On my computer the network, wireless, USB and modem all have power management options accessible through Device Manager. Check also if there is anything in the BIOS.

I have been using hibernation for years and would never want to shut down and restart between sessions. Apart from the extra time, I wouldn't remember what I was last doing.

I have the exact same problem on my new HP Pavilion dv9000 (Vista Ultimate). I've disabled EVERY device from waking the laptop but it still wakes up <1 min from standby or hibernation. From my research, i've found that many are having problems with Vista and sleep not working (wakes up prematurely, wakes up with blank screen, won't wake up). Not sure if this particular problem is software related, a driver bug (i.e. not really disabling the h/w from waking the laptop), or maybe requires a new BIOS (none available yet at the HP website).

Thanks....How do you get to that screen? I looked in the Control Panel > Network & Sharing Center but don't see it.....are you using Vista?

Thanks for the info.....sounds like a common denominator.

Open "Device Manager" in the Control Panel. Than individually open each component properties. If there's a "Power Management" tab than select it. You'll see the options for waking the component. Make sure the 'wake up' checkbox is unchecked.

I only found one with a power management option (Intel VE/100 Network Connection) and it was already set "Allow computer to turn off this device..."

How do you get into the bios? Does it vary according to the brand of computer?
    (f8? delete??)

...I got into the bios (hit "esc") but don't see any power options.

The specific property you want unchecked in the "Power Management" tab is named "Allow this device to wake the computer". There is often another property in that tab named "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". That is different and is used for power savings.

On entering BIOS, it does differ by PC (mine is F10). And mine does not have any power management exposed in the BIOS settings (unfortunately).

Yes, that's the way mine is set...but still wakes up <1min.

Thank you (all) for the helpful info....learn something everyday. I think I've
exhausted my options, though. Will check back later.

Hope you can work it out for your machine.

My previous comments were based on XP. However, I am currently having what may be a brief encounter with Vista and I see some differences.

When you are entering hibernation is the computer really hibernating (ie dumping the RAM to the HDD and then switching off) or is it going into a sleep mode? (This is the hybrid sleep mode in the power options). Try disabling hybrid sleep if it is enabled.

    Hi John,
I already had Sleep disabled. It appears to be totally off when I close the lid
(takes ~30 for the lights to go out).....then it wakes up after <1min.

    Thanks,
    Cal
