That's called a dock, you use third-party software like Objectdock, Rocketdock or RK Launcher. Works on XP and Vista.

And you can find said software in my Best free software for windows thread, along with some more. My personal favorite is Objectdock for it's light resource usage and speed but you might have other opinions.

No, well, at least not all of them, the docks i have tested and posted in my best free software for windows list are low on resources, out of those there i prefer Objectdock for it's light er footprint, and fast er speed than Rocketdock.

Check my included desktop first page top right and the ram/cpu usage is listed...can't go wrong with that.

I have a problem with my HDMI/HDTV. Everytime i plug it in the resolution automatically changes to 1280x720res (my native is 1280x800) on my laptop and this messes my desktop icons all over the place. The appearance on the hdtv is perfect.

Will this mac style docking thing stop it from going everywhere? I only have about 12 icons on desktop. Is there anyway to remove the windows startbar and replace its functions with the dock?

Nope, it's light on the resources. I use it a lot, very handy and good for impressing people  . RocketDock is the best, I used to use ObjectDock, but paying 20$ isn't worth it when you can get almost the same thing free.

^^^^^^^^^ Is that possible to get on RocketDock? (The weather and Calendar)
I'd use ObjectDock but free version sucks. The plus is the good stuff.
