Closer to xp pro requirements, or is it not going to run significantly faster than vista business given the same memory? 1gb would still be bare minimum?

With Basic, you could get away with running less RAM. There is less starting up with Windows, namely the Aero UI. I'd say you could get away with 512. Anything less would mean that you couldn't run a lot of software, and anything memory intensive wouldn't work well. Although I haven't run into a slowdown personally in Vista, I imagine it can happen with little RAM and several programs running.
However, if you are needing to join a domain, you will NEED Business or Ultimate. None of the other versions have the capability. -
Vista basic is basically lightweight (like a stripped version of Windows), will be less ram intensive as they do not run advanced services. 1GB should be the bare minimum even if you choose to run Basic as you can do a slight future proof of your computer.

If you'll only get 1GB of RAM, go with XP Pro. It's a lot faster, more stable, and currently, is still the OS of choice

It wont be a huge diffrence in memory, dont be one of the many people fooled by the amount of ram vista uses in its normal running state. Its just holding the ram untill an aplication or game needs it then it will release it.
basic is just cut down from the other versions, no areo and stuff. You can acheive the same effect with any of the higher versions of vista.
So to answer the original question to its fullest extent, vista business is not any more ram intensive than vista basic at all. You can just turn off the areo and other extra features if you want of vista business and pretty much be running vista basic but still have the extra few programs business comes with. -

But he can't turn off Aero...it's so cool...so worth $30...if you have cash to feed to Bill Gates. If he doesn't want Aero then what's the point of getting anything besides Basic? The other versions boast new features but all i see is Aero. Premium: Aero, Buisness: Slightly less cool Aero, Ultimate: Cool Aero.

Maybe this will help...lol
