I tried setting my setting to hibernate after 99999 minutes of inactivity, but then my laptop still goes hibernating after a long period of sleeping. Anyone know how to disable automatic hibernation for good? I am using Vista

Go to start -> accessories -> system tools (going from memory here) to Disk Cleanup, and there you can select to delete the hibernation files. :)

You can set "Hibernate after" to "Never" in advanced power options... I don't know if you tried that or not.

I don't want to completely disable hibernation. I tried setting my "Hibernate after" to 99999 minutes, but it ended up hibernating anyway after it is in sleep mode for awhile. I will try to put Never and see that will make a difference.

The reason why your laptop goes to hibernation after a loing sleep is to protect data. In sleep mode, the content of the memory is lost if the laptop runs out of battery, that's why the OS saves it to disk (hiberbates) just before running out of juice. If you want to avoid that, make sure you plug your laptop into power before leaving it in sleep mode for a long time (that way it will also be fully charged instead of being out of battery when you get back to it!).

For those who do want to deactivate hibernation, just use the following command (from the search line in the windows menu or a dos command line):
powercfg /h off. AS you may have guessed it, powercfg /h on will reactivate it. This is pretty helpful if you want to do a defrag of your hard drive withoiut the huge, unmovable hibernation file, and then recreate it on a fully defraged drive to make sure it's not fragmented, which will improve your hibernate/wake up time.

    Hope this helps!

Then something is wrong in your configuration (provided there was actual power, ie power brick plugged in as well, and delivering power to the laptop). Check in the power parameters that no event are set to triger hibernation (not only time, but also closing the lid, power button, etc). You can also try to switch hibernation off (see above), reboot, and switch it back on. That may help to reset it.
