    Dear All,
Until recently whenever I wanted to prevent a program from running at startup, I would go through msconfig and change the startup menu. However, I recently read that leaving msconfig in selective startup mode for prolonged periods of times if not a good thing. So my questions were
    1) Is it true that leaving msconfig in selective start-up for long is not a good thing?
    2) I am trying to prevent the following programs from running at start-up
    a) Adobe speed launcher (reader_sl.exe)
    b) Digital Line Detect (DLG.EXE)
    c) Diskeeper (DKICON.EXE)
    d) Presentation director (TPFNF7SP.EXE)
    e) Windows Media Player (WMPNSCFG.EXE)
Any recommendations on how to achieve this goal?
Thanks in advance from your help.
    CJ

You can use a program like CCleaner, which has an option to disable or remove startup entries.

    Hi Bangert,
I noticed that if I use CC Cleaner to disable startup entries..it still causes msconfig to go into selective start-up mode.

Some applications starts from the Starup folder. The rest does it from the registry so you can delete these entry from the registry. IMO, the best way is to go in the application's settings and disable it from there.

And what about leaving msconfig in selective startup for long? Is that a bad thing?

    hi

    Using Msconfg utility
Go to Start/search type in msconfig press enter, system configuration utility window will pop up. there in under startup tab uncheck those programs which u don want to load during start up, that's it. you are done :)

    if u have ccleaner installed,
u can uncheck those programs using ccleaner under tools/startup tab click on the program which u don want to load, then click on disable.

if u are using Revo uninstaller
Revo uninstaller Click on tools on the top, then autorun manager on left side, there in uncheck the programs u don want to load.

    hope it helps :)

Thanks a lot Taruian...I noticed that when I disable things thru Revo...it does not cause the msconfig to go into selective start-up mode as against CC Cleaner. Thanks again all.

I used msconfig once to disable a startup application from the list and when I uninstalled the application, it was still there. But that Software Explorer feature within Windows Defender is what I've been using from now. If you're going to use Windows 7 later, then I think they removed it though. :p
