Ok I have the latest updates on windows vista.

I have gone to group policies to enable the disable all autorun functions on all drives selection. i've also gone through the windows interface under autorun found in control panel and selected take no action on all selections. Further I have gone through to check the registry keys and find the autorun is correctly set at 0x0000ff.

But it doesnt seem to work. I put in some new usb key and it starts autorun and installs their software for it.

How do i properly disable autorun.

also where do i find the installed files of known USB devices from previous past installations.

    What exactly do you mean?
Does it automatically run an .exe file from a USB drive?
It sould do that - in German its "Standardprogramme" - somethingike "default programmes" - if you open that you'll have 4 options aftee which you have all autorun settings for CDs, DVDs, software CDs etc.

If you mean the driver for a new USB drive is automaticall installed - you can't change that.

If it instals a driver for the same drive every time then something is wrong.

And I do hope you haven't been messingaround in the Registry - especially in Vista tweaking and modifying does more harm than good.

it doens't run the .exe file. but it does install the auto detect hardware stuff. so basically the usb drive installs the software drivers into your comp so it can recognize it, the next time you plug in. I want this to STOP as well. I also want to find said file and delete it.

yeah I mean the driver. I want to disable that too. It is not reinstalling drivers for the same USB device. But it is installing drivers for new ones. I want to stop this.

you'd be disabling plug and play which is a Real Bad Idea.

Best you can do is to shut off the USB ports in the BIOS.

I use WinBubble to disable all autorun functions and it works great!

I don't need anything to pop up, its so easy to open my computer if u need to run anything.

google winbubble 1.76 it should do the trick along with some other nice gadgets like enabling Take Ownership of this file option to the shell which saves you a long hassle as its a tedious procedure incase a file was locked.

Did you uncheck the checkbox labeled "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" in Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > AutoPlay ? The checkbox is at the top of that screen.

As far as pop ups so, all WinBubble does is to supress the notification popups, the background or underlying process still take place.

Yea I guess its a plug and play issue. But isnt there a way to change settings to make them at least prompt me before they do anything.

You can if Windows hasn't got a a driver handy - in that case you are asked (at least I am).

If windows has the driver built in, I don't think you can.
    But why do you worry?
