Are you sure you heard it right? AFAIK, they are completely different from each other. Don't ignore Windows Updates. They are very important. Equally important like any updates released from your laptop maker, mainly for hardware issues, like drivers and similar.

    Question of the day:

Knowing that Windows Update has been around since the 90's, do you seriously believe the tech sipport guy?

I suppose that it's possible that there might be a conflict between the Win updater and _HP's proprietary updater; however, in that circumstance I think your tech support guy got it backwards - the worry would be that the _HP updater would cause the corruption, not the other way 'round.

I've played around with the _HP updater on my wife's 3 y.o. DV5224nr, and wasn't overly impressed with it; I leave Win updater to do its thing, and then manually check on the _HP website for any _HP-specific updates, such as proprietary drivers and BIOS updates, that I might need (and that weren't picked up by the Win updater).

HP Update is junk. Use Windows Update, and the just check the HP website with your model to see if there's any new major important updates.

On the HP website, I saw that my drivers were pretty old for the audio and wireless devices. So I saw an article on the HP website which said to update it before going to Vista SP1, but those exact new drivers weren't listed on the drivers page, so I saw it in Windows Update. :)

    Pffffttth!

Turn off HP Update completely. And do not accept hardware drivers from Windows Update; get them yourself, manually, when you have a need for them.

I would remove anything with "HP" in the name, unless you prefer using the software that comes pre-installed. None of it is necessary and I found it to be just extra bloat. Like the previous post I would go to the driver page for your computer model and manually download the drivers you need. You shouldn't disable windows update.

    DON'T disable Windows Update.

And I agree with the above posters - don't use the HP updater unless you REALLY want to. Just check the HP support site every few months to see if any new/critical driver updates have been released.
