hey guys. i finally got my laptop back after a month of repairs and it is a complete dump. i have to install everything again and reset everything. system restore wont help as all the restore points are from today. the repairs that were done were a mobo replacement and reconnecting the wireless card. i have everything excep my video games. i am not worried about my video games right now. the most annoying thing is the little check box that appears over EVERYTHING!!!
how do i get rid of it? it was never there before. i am also going to remove the annoying shortcut arrow but every time i download something to do it i get a runtime error in firefox. restored my butt. if it was restored everything would be as it was when i brought it in correct?
-
Go to Control Panel - Folder Options - View to find if this option "Use check boxes to select items" is checked.
-
that problem is solved. now the next one is shortcut arrows. as i said in the first post i cannot download the program to remove them.
-
What's the software? Have you tried Vista Shortcut Manager or WinBubble?
-
If it's Vista I don't recommend the registry hack to get rid of the shortcut arrows since it will affect some program links.
-
i never had much luck with winbubble. yes it is vista. anyway the shortcut manager worked and i shall continue putting together my laptop to its former glory.
-
The shortcut manager is the best program I've found for that purpose.
-
ive got a new problem for you guys. over the course of the afternoon i have had my desktop completely disappear. the taskbar and icons gone. nothing but the background and the mouse arrow. when i start my laptop i get warned by windows defender that i have a trojan: Win32/Vundo.gen!Q. i tell defender to remove it but it takes it sweet time doing a simple task.
i had the idea of using safe mode to get tid of it but lo and beholde: Windows Defender is not available in safe mode! was this an intentional mistake? how do i get rid of this? is this geek squad's way of saying "thanks"? -
vundofix did nothing and defender is still running into errors. how do i solve this?
-
Try this

or this:

It's not a pleasant one to uninstall . -
neither of those worked. is there any way to fix this?
-
My parent's computer had a trojan just like that (pretty sure the name was the same) via the fake program "WinSpywareProtect", and I had the same problem in windows defender; it would try to remove it then freeze the computer and say windows defender had an error.
What I did was, in that windows defneder screen below where it says the name of the trojan and stuff it lists the file location of the trojan. So I just went there myself and deleted it manually.
That seems to have pretty much fixed it, along with some other stuff (SpyBot SD scan, CCleaner, and whatever it is McAfee may have done). It's been a couple days now and it seems to be gone. -
the two problem children are fcccbxus.dll and aWOEtQHA.dll_old. however i cant delete them. the latter needs permission and former is connected to some process. i am the admin on the laptop. of course i had to rename a few things to get rid of my moms name. i bought it but it is under my mom's name. how can i delete them?

Time to reinstall the OS. Anything less is a bandaid on a gapping wound.

i just had it reinstalled from all the repairs. there has to be another option.
-
There is no other option. Geek Squad is absolutely horrible - never EVER let them touch any of your computers, or this is what will happen to you. They will make copies of all your private data, put viruses on your computer, keep it for a lot longer than they need to, and then the problem hasn't even been fixed half the time.
You can't really expect any better from big box stores like Worst Buy or Circuit Sh1tty, though. -
sorry to say but i agree ^^^^^ i have the geek squad mri disks (from a freind who used to work there), and imo they are not worth the time to install them all that can be done manually and be done better if ou know what you are doing which i assume they dont if they have to use the mri disk
-
i went into safe mode and deleted the files in question and the threat has been neutralized. if the geek squad did all those things mentioned wouldnt they have a lawsuit on their hands? do you have any proof of their misdeeds? it seems to me that you guys are a little quick on the draw. just calling it like i see it.
-
IMO its time for you to do a clean install of vista.

there are current lawsuits going on now with the geeksquad.. search google...and yes i know people that used to work for them (^^^ beat me to it).. trust me they were told to charge for a lot of things they maybe didnt need to according to my freind which is one of the reasons he left..
-
Unfortunately the employee screening process is not sufficient in many of these places. The actions by some agents is reprehensible, and usually they are clueless outside of very basic repairs. However, the Geek Squad DID NOT put a trojan on your machine. If they sent it back to you completely restored, you downloaded the trojan on your own. Guaranteed. That is what WAREZ will get you.

We met back at that anti-piracy convention in '07, remember? ;/ -

I have no trouble trusting the anti virus detection that occurs as a new file is added to my system. But if something gets past that and actually DOES infect the machine, like has occurred in your case, then I do not trust ANYTHING to be able to search out the virus.

i am really ticked off right now
