hey guys i just made a stupid mistake...
i recently tried fixing a friend's computer and wanted to see if the problem was with the hdd so i made the stupid decision of taking a hdd out of my laptop and putting it in the other computer to test everything and install vista on a separate partition just to make sure everything would work...
well after i was done i deleted the seperate partition i made for my friends computer....
but when i put the hdd back in my laptop none of my hardware was working and it gave me a bsod
i dont want to lose all my programs like office so i am looking for an option other than reformatting and installing vista again
i really could use some help
thanks
(im sorry if i didnt do a good job explaining the problem)

Well...
The HDD you used, was your Vista installation on it? If it was you may be lucky and only the boot inf file is "messed up". -
How do I edit that file?
-
Good question...
Or was it boot ini.
Anyway - you could try via aLinux Live CD once you know what to put in...
Another possebility with te danger of messing up a lot of software and drivers is Vista's repair function - it should keep you files intac though.... -
Boot.ini has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Post the exact error code or info for us to help you. What does it say in the BSOD? Take a picture, upload it, and post it here. -
ok one sec
the bsod says
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
and then it just says restart blah blah -

Does the system boot in SAFE MODE?
If not, you could try doing a repair install, I'd highly advise backing up your files prior to doing so, while they will not be erased when doing a repair install, it's better to be safe than sorry.
I'd just like to say that if nothing works, boot using a Linux Live CD, backup your important files and do a clean install. -
There must be some more information there. Like -
Also, boot into the Safe Mode (press F8 when Windows is booting, it'll give you the option), and see if you can go at least there. If you can, remove the graphics card drivers from there. -
Maybe, if you are very lucky, a windows repair using your windows dvd will revive it, but most of the time, you have killed your OS installation.
Here's a repair guide
