I just got a laptop in a trade, and there are songs on iTunes still. When I try to play them, I get "song not found"

    What does this mean

It means that the file location of the song file is no longer there or has been moved.

So iTunes still lists them, but they've physically been deleted. If they're anywhere, they're in the Recycle Bin. ;)

sometimes this happens if say you have a file on your desktop add it to itunes then move the file to say your music folder, it thinks its sill on the desktop and is still looking for it there. search the pc for the song name see if he actually deleted them or just moved them

Or, chances are the former owner does what I do - keep all my media on external hard drives. If I open iTunes, the tracks are all still there. But they won't play (getting the same error message you find) unless I plug the external drive in.

Right-click on any of the tracks and click Get Info. The first tab on the left should list the source directory.
