I just reformatted my computer and when I put all my music back on my machine (stored on a external HD), I got the message that I need to authorize my computer to play my purchased music. Now I expected to get this message because I have gotten it before, last time I reformatted and when I transfered computers.
But, my question is what happens when I run out of "computers to authorize"? There is a limit of 5 machines and I have already used "3 out of the 5" because of reformats. I'm not putting my music on a new machine so is there a way to avoid this authorizing issue? If I reformat one more time and then buy a new computer (which is very possible within the next year) that would be 5 machines according to apple and it seems as if I'd be SOL if I wanted to transfer my music again after that....

You need to de-authorize iTunes before formatting.

Yea, I was looking through the options just after I posted and saw that...pretty dumb on my part, thanks!

I've already hit my limit of 5. I guess I'm screwed. I don't really know how to fix it.

Contact Apple about it.

If you go to your account settings in iTunes you can choose to "Deauthorize all computers"
BUT you only get one of those uses a year. Otherwise you have to email Apple about it and they will deauthorize for you. -
You can log into your itunes account at the store and deauthorize all your computers to get rid of the ones you formatted. You can only do this like once a year or something I believe.
