iTunes was importing CD's moderatly fast (around 20X) and now i'm lucky if I get near 7X...sometimes 2-5X....whenever I use the iPod as a CD player now, the sound is distorted, as in a very choppy almost skipping sound; if I even play Sirius radio streaming while burning a CD on iTunes, the sound of the Sirius is distorted, etc....
I JUST BOUGHT an Inspiron e1705 and I think the problem may have been conflicting drivers from Sonic Dig. Media. I uninstalled Sonic, and reinstalled iTunes, and i have the same problem. I used the media-plug-in, still the same problem. I've searched all over the iTunes website, and through the forums, and there are other people with this same problem, and no one with a remedy.
Is there anyway possible I can fix the CD-Rom/DVD Burner's drivers so iTunes will go back to normal? Also, someone on the site mentioned "downgrading" iTunes from version 6.03 back to 6 or 6.02, but i could not find the file anywhere on the web.
If anyone has an older version of iTunes handy or a solution to this problem (driver-based), PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
I bought this new Dell mainly for this reason!
thanks.

It could be the disk media. Which Dvd drive did you get, Sony or NEC? With my Sony burner, I cannot get above 4x dvd and 16x cd.
-
where can i update the drivers....I believe its NEC but i don't know...how do i find out
-
burning stuff on other programs is fine, but i need iTunes for my ipod
-
you can download the drivers from dell's website (support.dell.com)
I would try using some other program like WinAMP, or use a trial version of Nero to rip/burn CDs to see if you get the same results. If you do get the same results, then it will be the drive or the type of media you are using.
If not, then you've narrowed it down to a software problem.
Have you done a clean install yet?

yes i did the clean install a few days ago..clean install of windows u mean?
-
What did you do to get the error?
Yes, clean install of windows. -
yes i did the clean install...i was burning a CD to iTunes...
mo computer = mo problems? lol -
You were burning a CD to iTunes? Do you mean you were uploading songs off of a CD to iTunes, or burning songs from Itunes to a CD?
Try updating your driver for your CD/DVD burner (support.dell.com) -
uploading songs off a CD to iTunes...then the blue screen came up...but yeah, anytime i PLAY or upload a CD in iTunes, it comes in choppy, distorted...ALL SOUND from the computer comes in that way while iTunes burns....
I don't know which driver it would be to update for the cd/dvd burner...is it this one:
Release Title: Audio: SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio, Driver, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Multi Language, Inspiron MP061, v.5.10.0.4823, A03
Release Date: 01/26/2006
Description: Sigmatel STAC92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver
If so, I just did. ANd it does nothing. I believe I already had this one in when i did the clean install. -
That is the sound card driver. I would try that too. Also, when I looked for the e1705 dvd drivers, I couldn't find any. I pulled up my i9300 specs and found the nec firmware update. ( http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&typecnt=1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&fileid=128131)
That is it. If you have the sony drive, ( http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&typecnt=1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&fileid=134618)
This is what you need. -
I have a Samsung cd/dvd writer....i looked at their site and there are no drivers available...i don't know where to look on the support.dell site...
also...everytime i click on the iTunes icon, it says the registry settings are missing and to reinstall it...everytime I reinstall it, it fixes nothing....
GRRRRR -
you should really change the name of this thread because itunes doesn't really seem to be the issue at all.
-
it is an iTunes issue b/c my Nero and Windows Media play CD's perfectly fine, it's just iTunes that is messing up..i've done every kind of research on the apple site, the dell site, the windows site, googled the issue, everything...I even fixed the registry settings in a troubleshoot on the apple.com site. While the menu telling me to fix the settings no longer appears (Windows had told me I corrected them), the CD player on iTunes still plays choppy/distorted music...
mind you, when I play the MP3 versions of these files on iTunes, they come in fine...it's the CD/DVD writer for iTunes that is the issue. -
I have firewalls, yes but what does that have to do with it hun
-
lol, man you guys read my posts way to fast. since you figured out it was iTunes problem, i'll move it back to software. I was seriously thinking it was hardware.
Well i saw a problem where Norton was block iTunes from working from properly.
Is the sound you are hearing a popping or clicking noise? LOL i'm using iTunes help cause i'm getting desperate.
If it is, then in iTunes-->edit menu-->preferences-->select "use error correction when reading audio CDs" -
ur sucha doll...haha...yes its popping and clicking noises while the cd rom is in-use during iTunes..this includes anything streaming from the internet (such as Sirius radio)...
every other audio application on my notebook plays and burns cds just fine -
i have AVG, not Norton
-
k, try the solution I put in my previous post.
Can you even get back into iTunes yet? -
Metamorphical Good computer user
-
this makes me so glad that i didn't get an iPod. I feel bad for you loosecannon.
-
yeah i always could get back into iTunes...as for that option you put, I don't see it there in preferences (playback right?)...I think you're including the media-plug in which i deleted
-

This sounds alot like something my Toshiba used to do. It would do this aggravating thing where the songs would randomly become choppy and funky sounding. I would pause Itunes, then it would go away for a while and return later.
;
It would occationally blue screen....
Does that sound similar? -
LOL,that was my fault. I should have checked to make sure of the exact place instead of taking iTunes Help's word for it.
Its under edit-->preferences-->advance tab-->importing tab-->should be last check box -
again, iTunes was great...this probly happened b/c of one of the other cd playing devices i have installed (i.e. Sonice Dig. Media, Dell MediaExperience, etc....I have uninstalled these programs since)..
I don't know how to describe the sound...the sound on the notebook clicks and pops whenever I play something or download something on iTunes...not only that, but the download time went from 20X to 6X...a LOT slower. -
Did you recently update iTunes or any other software before this started happening?
I know certain programs like winamp/WMP have limits on what they can upload and burn unless you buy the pro version, then you can set it to unlimited. I haven't seen an option like that in iTunes though. -
I checked that box and played some more cds again..it did nothing...i didn't have that checked before when it worked...
thank god for the dunk contest right now -
i'm just using the newest version....if there's anywhere i can find an older version, i'd like to try it. i believe i read somewhere where the guy "downgraded" and this problem was solved...I looked all over the web for an older version...no potato, tho
-
Metamorphical Good computer user
Out of curiousity, do you own an Ipod? If you do, you can install Itunes from the CD that came with it. I believe an outdated version still ships with it.
-
yes...and it works fine...hi Niki
-
wait-- so now its working?
-
Metamorphical Good computer user
I'm confused... What just happened.
;
-
haha no my iPod works fine...my iTunes still stinks..im gonna go look for the outdated iTunes but i dont think i got that disc...
-
Metamorphical Good computer user
It might be worth it to look and see if you do.
-
here is an earlier version of 6.0
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes60.html
I'm still searching for 5.0 -
I tried 4.8...lol...the choppiness and distortion is even worse!
-
nope i tried that link yesterday, it takes you directly to 6.03....
it had something to do with drivers, it must...i just don't know where to look...dell has nothing for the samsung cd/dvd writer.. -
so we've ruled out earlier versions. Have you tried ripping it at a higher rate? You can change your settings in the importing tab that i listed earlier.
I'm not saying that it can't be the drivers, but if you aren't having this problem when ripping using WMP, then to me it doesn't make sense that it would happen with iTunes.
Just to make sure, is your device manager showing any devices without drivers? -
tried it all....i could do another clean install...
then again........ -
i think that should be last resort.
Don't feel bad. I can't get iTunes to uninstall now
Where you having this problem before you reformatted? -
yes, mainly a reason why i wanted to reformat in the first place
-
i'm am pretty stumped with this i guess, i don't know why itunes would be having a problem, it has always worked flawlessly for me and it sounds like it was working pefectly for you until now, do you have an Apple store near by? you could always ask them. but i don't know if they can help you that much.
so your other media players will play cd's but itunes is freaking out? i wish i could suggest something but i looks like you have tried everything
so your ipod is syncing with itunes fine and everything? and playing music fine? but when you play a CD with itunes it pops and skips and what not? just trying to figure out what is going on.
do you have Itunes set to import songs everytime you put in a music CD? i know if you try to play a CD while you are importing this is the result. -
well i started burning songs on winamp and its burning at 3x instead of the OLD iTunes 20+x....so im taking it must be a driver-related problem with the cd/dvd writer....i searched for drivers for the samsung tsstcorp ts-l532B and there is none...it was an incredible burner, but there must be some conflicts with iTunes and other audio programs...
im not playing a song while burning...im talking about CD Playing OR Burning....all SOUND on the computer (aim/windows effects, sirius radio stream, etc.) locks up, sounds choppy and distorted while iTunes is playing a cd or burning one...not too mention really slow burns (3-7x)
the sirius doesn't quite come in so choppy while buning on winamp, but it still clicks and pops here and there...it doensn't get to the point that its unlistenable.. -
so it must be a hardware issue then right? wtf mate ^_^
i really am stumped i guess. it isn't the speakers or sound card is it?
you could search for or reinstall the soundcard drivers. that is the only other thing i could think of. -
I figured it might be a CPU issue as to why Sirius is choppy when you are burning.
I guess if you aren't happy with it, you could always reinstall. You could try to repair windows, and see if that will fix it.
-
now SIrius comes in OK while burning on winamp...
can't be a soundcard problem b/c all effects, sirius, CD players, mp3s and such come in perfectly fine if i'm not using iTunes...but then again, the burning is slow for other applications...it definitely has to do with the cd/dvd writer....but it still plays CD's and DVD's fine on other applications..
there is a DIRECT ISSUE between the cd/dvd writer (and its drivers?) and iTunes........ -
Just my $.02...iTunes, and anything else Apple, assumes it knows more about what you want than you do. Apple stuff is almost virus like in its tenacity. You can't just 'uninstall' iTunes. You need to do a very thorough registry cleaning to actually remove it. I finally rid myself of all (?) traces of iTunes, QuickTime, QT Helper, etc. and never looked back. I use the iPod plug-in for WinAmp and Quicktime Alternative for other Apple formats. Unless you are buying music from iTunes, you don't need any of that stuff.
-
could you please link me to the ipod plug-in for winamp?
-
nevermind, it's right on the winamp homepage....also, i deleted both itunes and quicktime...how do u get COVER ART in winamp? so when i transfer to the ipod it'll show the artwork...
iTunes destroys my CD/DVD burner....
