so, i install a clean version of win 7 home premium 64bit onto my new ssd drive. i go to enter the key and it says its a invalid product key. I skip it and finish the install. I try MS phone activation. I enter the installation key and get transfered to a rep. He then tells me that the inst key is invalid and to hold for customer support. Then they hang up on me. After the 3rd time i called back, they actually transfer me. The MS customer service guy is great. I explain that im trying to get a clean install and he asks for the product key. He tells me the it isnt a valid product key for any microsoft product. He tells me that hp can fix this and give me a new product key. I call hp tech support. They spend 2 hours on the phone with me, try the online install, try to conference the activation by phone with microsoft 2 times...first time microsoft hangs up and 2nd time they pick up the phone and place the recieve on the desk. Then they try to have me change the product key and ultimately, are now having me transfered to hp.shopping support...hopefully this works. I am so mad!!!!

just wanted to vent, give a heads up, and possibly hear some if anyone has any suggestions for me

his system was missing the oem hp.xrml cert for hp. he had to install the correct one to accept his oem lic key already installed. nothing more. very easy fix

that's what ABR does copy out and in again, not?

i, by now, always use that tool to get my activations out before a reinstallation.

most people have no idea though. i make myself oem pre activated discs for each machine with the right cert and key on them and keep them aside personally. though easy enough to add the cert later anyway

I am lucky enough to use full version of Win 7 on my both computers and do not have to worry about activation problems.

i never have activation problems, ever, myself. used the phone for some systems, but that's quick and painless, too, anyways.

guys problem has been solved. yes he was a oem key. that doesnt matter though makes 0 difference without the matching hp cert. a oem slp key WILL NOT activate period online or over the phone without the matching cert installed. this is fine if you use hp media to reinstall. but any downloaded version or borrowed one will not have the matching cert it installs like oem dell or hp media. so you simply add the cert. i helped him manually install the hp cert and then all matched and now he is good.

three things are required for oem activation. the first is the slic 2.0 or 2.1 table in the actual bios. without this doesnt matter if you have the cert AND oem key activation will be a no go.

second is a xrml cert. this MUST match the slic tables in the bios exactly. you can not have a hp slic'ed bios and a dell cert will not work. and there are even more than one hp one they must match.

third is a oem slp lic key. this is NOT THE KEY on the bottom of your laptop. this is the original key used to install the oem version, the key on the bottom is not used in your original installation of windows by a oem. believe it or not every dell uses the same oem slp key for activation the key under will be different. same with hp. there is only ONE oem slp key for say windows 7 premium. 32 and 64 make no difference. without any of the above three activation will not work PERIOD.

then even still you have the issue of having slic 2.0 or 2.1 in the bios. 2.0 is for vista 2.1 is for win7. if your system came with vista it prob does not have the 2.1 slic in the bios. thus even with the hp cert installed and the win7 oem key will again NOT activate. for a 2.0 slic you also need the matching 2.0 cert and oem slp key for vista as well. if anyone has any questions please ask i can explain further

but you still need to re activate your key each time. when you have a oem slp activation it does not require activation its done automatically when all three criteria are matched by the os during installation. thats the reason i make my own discs with the correct info for each unique install. upon first boot up windows is already activated without even connecting to the internet this way.

Sure I have to activate them.

AFAIR the only problem with activating retail versions is when you do that too often (do not remember the exact number of activations per period) and that is it.

If I activate it on my netbook or All-in-one desktop or some other PC does not mater. I am completely free to do that. Does not matter who made the PC.

retail versions and oem versions from places like newegg work off a points system. as you change or upgrade components or major drivers you build up points once at a certain level it will require to be reactivated. even if you do not format at some point it may still require you to reactivate it. sometimes a gpu change can trigger them etc a major component.. though a format is a automatic need to reactivate. and you are correct that is the benefit of a retail disc it can be used on any system nothing needs to match like a oem slp version does (which is different than the oem versions sold at newegg and places those are NOT the same as a slp version)

his was a oem slp though as i stated

technically you could add the correct info to your own bios and make a disc with the correct info (your retail key etc) and have it activate on its own
