I downloaded the win 7 64bit driver but when i install it says i dont meet the requirements. I have a sager 8662 full specd 500gb drive running at 62C i was hoping that this would help lower the temp.

Did you download it from the Sager website?

You get that error because your Bios settings are set to XP as the OS instead of Vista. If you change the settings in the Bios to Vista and then install those drivers you will get a BSOD.

I don't know the workaround but it is something to remember when you do a fresh install of Windows 7.

What version of the storage manager did you download? Are you running 7 RC or 7 RTM? I only ask because I didn't see any Windows 7 drivers, just Windows 7 RC drivers on the Intel website.

"Ok, that's one of the major reasons why your hard drive is hotter than it should be. You need to switch to SATA/AHCI mode - right now your (SATA) hard drives are running in emulated IDE mode ("XP mode"), which will run hotter and will not have the proper driver support from Intel for them. There are a lot of guides on these forums on how to do this, including a few posts on the first page mentioning a few ways of doing this (from a registry edit to repair/reinstall the OS with a floppy/etc containing SATA drivers after setting BIOS to "Vista" mode).

edit: Oh, duh, you're running Win 7, so you will have SATA support right off the bat. You probably need to reinstall, or at least repair install, after switching BIOS mode to Vista/AHCI (SATA supported) mode, as the easiest solution. This isn't a minor thing; it's reduced temps for various people from 3-5+ degrees."

oh good.so i dont have a bad harddrive however...i have reinstalled ll of my things twice takes about 24 hours...im not willing to reinstall everything for 3-5 degrees D: im tired lol. is there a way to se tit to vista in bios and if there is an error i can just repair..the problem is what if the repair fails...my last install failed boot and the repair could not fix it leading me to have to reinstall.

You won't have to reinstall everything because a repair install will keep all of your existing software. You might have to reinstall your Audio and Video drivers but everything else should be fine. I have a similar issue so I will be doing this procedure very soon. I will change my Bios settings to Vista and do a repair install of Windows 7 X64 RC 7100.

This is very annoying, in Windows XP I could do a repair installation / in place upgrade from the CD but in Windows 7 I can only run this after starting up Windows.

Since the whole point was to enable Vista and AHCI before the upgrade I can no longer do this since you can't go into Windows with this enabled since it causes a BSOD.

I am sure there is another work around I saw mentioned on this forum but I will just enable this before I do a full installation of Windows 7 when I get the full version. I don't know why I can't do an in place upgrade direct from the CD anymore

Although the driver installation within Windows 7 X64, after the Registry edit did not work, I rebooted into the Bios and changed the OS to Vista anyway and when I rebooted, I no longer received the BSOD and Windows started to install drivers for the HDD again.

I just double checked my Bios settings and it definitely says Vista and AHCI enabled so it looks like it did actually work which is excellent. I will do some more testing.

I have now been able to install the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager X64 version :D

    Go here http://tinyurl.com/mz2h26

Download the 64-bit 0r 32-Bit Floppy Configuration Utility, You will need this folder to point to during manual installation of the Drivers in Device Manager.

Download the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager installation setup which will be called IATA89ENU.exe. This is just in case the manual installation fails for you like it did for me.

After you have downloaded the required files, just follow all of the instructions precisely and it should work.

You won't need to be connected to the internet during the installation. As for temperature differences, it is too early to tell since I have only just started using my laptop after install for a short amount of time.

I will update with temperature details later.

EDIT: HDD Temperature seems a lot lower, my room is about 25C and I always use a Zalman 1000 Cooler on the lowest settings so take that into consideration.

Before installation of the Intel Matrix Driver, my idle temperatures were about 50-55C, now they are about 40C-42C. Under load temps such as defagging would go up to 62C before but now during defragging it has not gone past 49C.

Why would you not be able to run all of your apps after doing this?

If it fails all you need to do is change the bios setting back to XP, save settings and if something else goes wrong, you can just use System Restore.

If you are talking backups in general then the best method is to use a totally separate external USB drive for backups, I have heard that the Windows 7 image program works well but I use Drive Snapshot.

By the way, my defrag is still running and HDD temperature is at 49C and has still not gone past this so it looks like a great improvement.

Download the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager installation setup that I linked to earlier, the one I said you should use in case the f6 divers installation failed. Reboot, change Bios settings to Vista and then install.
