No. It's completely not worth the choice unless you want to *cough* legally change the language of Windows... and do remote desktop/networking stuff.

Home Premium will use less disk space and resources which is what a gamer needs. It's not worth the price that they put on it.

    Just stay with HP.

First, if you want to use bitlocker, make sure your laptop has a TPM chip on the board or it won't work.

Secondly, allot of people forget that you get XP mode with Ultimate which comes in handy often.

But beyond that I see no real reason to do it besides language packs. Personally I think if you pay for ultimate M$ should throw in Office or atleast word and outlook.

Home Premium and Ultimate use the same amount of disk space on initial install. You are basically unlocking what's already on the OS when you move up from Home Premium to Ultimate. ;)

Wrt more resources, yes it does have some additional resources but not enough to impact system performance as most gamers have 4GB plus of ram on their gaming computers.

Ultimate does use more resources than other versions of Windows. HOWEVER, the OS automatically manages all available resources to make sure that the program you have focus on has all the resources it needs. Hence, gaming wise all versions of Windows 7 are the same with respect to gaming and if any difference at all (which there isn't) the end user would never notice unless he or she ran a benchmark over and over again and then analyzed the results of many many runs.

bitlocker does NOT require the availability or use of an on-board TPM.

BL will *optionally* use a TPM just as it will also *optionally* use a removable USB stick for key storage.

There are free and pay-ware alternatives to BL including Truecrypt that are more trusted/capable though.

Bitlocker is just as good as Truecrypt. However, you need to use group policy editor to up the encryption scheme for Bitlocker. Do a search for some reviews between BL and Truecrypt. Some reviewers have found BL to be faster for encrypting and decrypting using a similar or greater strength encryption compared to Truecrypt.

You can always download virtual pc if all you need is xp occassionally (or something earlier) , but yes, xp mode has some uses that Virtual PC does not.

I rarely see people use this feature, even though it is very useful....

You need a seperate XP license if you do it yourself using VM Player, virtual PC or VirtualBox. XP mode however includes the proper license.

You can use VMware Player without getting a separate XP license. You need to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed along with XP mode. Then you install VMware Player and you can choose to import the XP mode virtual machine into VMware Player.

A guide is available from VMware on how to do this.

That is the same. You need XP mode to get the license. If you just copy someone's XP mode, you are still kind of not using a proper license.

Only XP mode(that comes only with Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise) has a proper 'free' license.

What you are suggesting is to migrate an XP license. I can also migrate my old XP machine's license this way by calling Microsoft.

I got it and thought that i really would need it and i never even went ahead and encrypted my hard drive or anything so for your needs, id say stay stock and put the extra money into ram or more games xD

I see no real reason not to upgrade, if you have a licence for it. I'm not sure what additional resources people are seeing consumed between home/professional and ultimate, I've seen no additional resource overhead. It's less of a "do you need this feature" question and more "why run an artificially limited OS" in my perspective.

Now, if you have to purchase a licence to get it up and running, I'd go ahead and weigh features to see if you really need it, but overall, there's no compelling reason not to upgrade.

Home premium is pretty gimped. IT's almost impossible to put modified atheros drivers onto it because there's no way to access the policy manager.

um, ultimate seems to be more expensive than Home Premium, that is a very good reason NOT TO.

90% of the people I see running Ultimate seem to have bought it just because it's the most expensive/complete edition, rather than because they actually need the features.

I use Professional because it does certain things that I definitely need that Home Premium doesn't, but considered the upgrade to Ultimate to be too expensive considering I don't really need its additional features. Realistically, Home Premium is fine for the vast majority of users.
