i just want to back-up files on to a 4.7g dvd-r, basically to be used on a pc and not on a dvd player.

Every version of Nero I've used was free. And free is always worth it.

Nero is not free, where do you get it free?
Nero is somewhat worth it because of it's easy to use interface and it's all around compatibility but there are a handful of programs out there that can do the same thing that Nero does but is free. -
nothing comes free.... u just gotta look places.
lawlz_xd, do u really want an answer? lol -

I know what you are thinking about but I doubt that's what Lithus is talking about, nonetheless that kind of talk is not allowed here.

I can't live without Nero 9. It's the best DVD maker IMO.
-
I don't mean illegal free. I've either gotten it with my computer, or some CD/DVD writer. Never had to go out and buy it before.
-
As mentioned, it depends on how attached you are to your money, and at what price you can get a copy of Nero (some computers bundle a light version with their OEM disks for example).
For basic data burning, any of the free DVD recorders on the market will do the job just fine - including the Windows one, which as far as I can remember, is a stripped down old version of Roxio.
Nero probably can do the same job faster, better, more reliably, etc. etc. etc., and can burn in half a million different formats - but all that probably won't make any difference to you if all you're doing is burning data files to a DVD. -
-
wow that was fast hehe
so what do you guys use? -
Nero is a great all around program
Yes its free (when you get a new system or optical drive).
You usually get the Nero OEM version.... which is all you need really.
Here is where to get the CD for free if you want (fully legal):

I'm not sure but if you just want to burn data files to a DVD... doesn't Vista have that capability built in? (Of course I don't know if you're using Vista... I'm not.
)
-
Nero (or any bringing software) that verifies data after being burned is what I recommend.
Avoid packet writing (like Windows built-in junk) -

I dont know where I got my copy of Nero from, I think it was bundled with other software when I built my desktop with my dad two years ago. Anyway it is very easy to use to make DVDs, but for some reason the same Nero on my desktop is not compatible with Vista. For me it doesnt matter yet since for making just basic data discs the built in feature in Vista works really good. Vista formats the disc like a USB flash drive so you can add and remove files as you desire, or close the disc. If you keep it open though, it will only be readable on Vista and XP, not Windows 2000 and prior operating systems.

Nero 7 works fine in Vista, make sure to go to get the latest updates.
FREE update here:

NOTE: The update is, in fact, a full version as well... you will just need to type in the Serial # when asked. The version of the Nero (Express, Ultra, etc...) will be determined on the Serial # typed in.

IMHO Nero rocks. Been using it exclusively now for about 3 years and never a problem. No more expensive drink coasters lying around my place due to burn failures etc....
-
I used to be a big Nero fan up to version six. When 7 came out it got fat and bloated trying to take over everthing. I switched over to Ashampoo though I do miss the Nero Browser.
-
-
me too... still using Nero 6 Ultra.
-
I'm using 7 Ultra...it uses something called ProductSetup which lets you remove individual components. Right now all I have installed are Burning ROM and Wave Editor to create ringtones.
The only pain in the a** abouut 7 is that it installs Nero Scout without asking. Pretty underhanded, but after installation you can disable that as well. I think it's using a pretty small footprint right now. -
just a question.... which is better: Roxio creator or Nero? cuz my laptop comes with Roxio
is nero worth it?
