ok so about two weeks ago my norton anti virus expired or something. Now, already, my instant messangers are always freezing up, my internet is crazy slow, and the thing lags unbelievably. Task manager says somehow my computer is using 100 percent of its resources.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be, what to do about it, or how to find out what it is?

    Thanks

How about looking in task manager to see which process is using 100% cpu? It's kinda hard for us to do that for you :)

There is no relation between norton expiring and your computer going slow crazily. Norton antivirus checks for a valid subscription at start up. Because your's has expired the cpu will be in full activity immediately after start up until norton displays the "expired" message. Get another antivirus like AVG or Avast or buy norton.

Get rid of Norton completely and run CCleaner or something similar. Install AVG, or better still, subscribe to NOD32.

I've run crap cleaner and scanned pc. doesn't really work.

So, about the same time as norton expired, i was prompted by aim 6 for updates, and I have. I took the advice fo the first guy and tried to figure out which processes were taking up all my system resources. I have found that most of the time, under the "CPU" column, system idle process uses the most at like 90, and then also aolsoftware.exe uses from 50-90 also. Funny thing is when i close the aolsoftware thing, then whatever other program i have starts using like 90 until i have closed all my programs.

    ideas?

As suggested, get rid of Norton first. Then, unless you're unfortunate enough to be using AOL as an ISP, I suggest getting rid of everything in your machine relating to it, too. Deleting these apps greatly improved the performance of my eMachines desktop which was so bogged down with these and several other useless apps (eBay for one!), it barely ran at all.

Someone mentioned that he thought there was no relation between Norton expiring and the slowness of your machine. That may not be so, if in the absence of Norton, your machine has acquired some sort of nastiness. You said you scanned your machine. With what? Did you run an AV scan, antispyware scan? Both (hopefully).

If you're running XP, you can use services.msc to disable processes you don't want running on your machine, and msconfig to stop unneeded startup programs. Not sure how exactly you do that with Vista - it only lasted a few days on my machine. Check out BlackViper for help on speeding up either system.

System Idle Process at 90% means only 10% of you CPU is used.
In other words, SIP shows how much free CPU power you have left.

Most everyone gets SIP at abou 90% most of the time:
