did you uninstall the old one before installing itunes 5?
i just installed itunes 5 last night and everything seems to be fine. the only thing was at first it gave me a warning about some missing registry settings used by itunes driver to burn CD. i just reinstalled it again and it seemed to work.

oh and i think i still have itunes4 somewhere on my computer

One time, I had a very similar problem to what you are experiencing. I had iTunes 4.7.1 installed, and I went to install 4.8 to get video support, and the install would never complete. I would always get some sort of error message, and it would exit the setup. There was a code for the error message, but I couldn't find anyone who had the same error message as I had gotten.

4.9 came out a few weeks later, and I couldn't install that either. It must have been something to do with the registry.

The only solution I found was...sorry to say it...formatting and reinstalling windows. I needed to do it anyways...so I just said I might as well get it over with. Now I have 5.0.1 installed and it works very good.

However, now that I think about it...have you tried creating another account and try installing iTunes from there? Perhaps that would work. ;)
