ever since i downloaded and installed the latest itunes, i have had nothing but confusion. every time i launch the program i get the license agreement screen and i have to accept or itunes doesnt open. also once i accept and the program opens i am hit with another message. this one says that itunes is not the default music player. i check the "dont ask me again" box and click no and i get this second message every time when i want to use itunes.

this is ridiculous. i looked up apples support...bad idea. their support is crap and does NOT mention the problem i just described. i still have the installer for itunes 7 if i want to roll back which i may have to if this doesnt get sorted out.

Instead of rolling back... ditch iTunes completely. There are plenty of better media player/manager programs around. I don't know what your needs are so I can't make a specific recommendation, but... check out this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3736596

iTunes is the root of all evil!

My roommate has had some epic battles with iTunes. It likes to take control of your library... tisk tisk.

Yes! iTunes 8 is buggy. Here's what I suggest if you want to use iTunes.

    1. Completely uninstall iTunes, Quicktime and Bonjour
    3. Run CCleaner
    4. Install iTunes 8
    5. Uninstall Bonjour
    6. Disable Quicktime, iTunes and any iTunes "helper" or "update" stuff from your startup files. (I use Autoruns to do this).
    7. Disable or modify unwanted Apple services. Win Key + R, type services.msc into the text box: Make sure to Stop each service too. Not just set it to disable or manual.
    - iPod Service, set to manual
    - Apple update service, set to disable
    - Apple mobile device service, set to disable (unless you use an iPhone)

I think that's it? Yup a total PITA which is why I only update iTunes like once/year.

    Ugh, all iTunes are buggy.
Use MediaMonkey if you need to synch an iPod, heck even if you don't.

Not a bad solution, but Apple LOVES to update their firmware to render 3rd party apps useless with their devices.

Don't update your iPods's fw then. If iPods are as glorious as everyone claims (I don't think they are), the preloaded fw should suffice.

well, here is what i will do. i will use mediamonkey for listening to music and itunes for all my syncing needs. i have tried to sync using winamp but that in itself was a PITA. it basically never synced, all it did was copy the same files over and over.

Why not use MediaMonkey to synch? Never had any probs with the two iPods in my house. That or sharepod...

I wish I could still run iTunes 6.0.5, my favorite versions. Somewhat speedy compared to 8, and it didn't screw you over (as much).

I made the jump to a Classic, so I need 8 now basically. I'd try out other software, but at this point, I just don't have the time to change over.

Ah well, iTunes definitely has it's issues that will never be resolved and it's simply because the majority of it's user base doesn't care enough to force them to change it.

I'm not sure who "everyone" is that are claiming iPods are glorious. Just about any hardware device ever conceived gets a firmware update; from TVs to hard drives to MP3 players etc... Maybe you should just stick to helpful comments.

True enough you can not bother updating the firmware *shrugs*.

This is an iTunes "lite install" trick which may interest you:
    http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=554&page=2

Although, even with this trick, I would rather just skip iTunes entirely and use something else unless you need iPod sync and other programs haven't worked well for you.

I've never heard of a tv that needed a fw update...
    Bluray players yes...

Yup even TVs have firmware updates. Does anyone actually do it? Who knows but here's an example.

purplegreendave, the reason i use itunes to sync is that i have videos on my ipod(movies and the fourth season of Mythbusters) and mediamonkey doesnt support video files.

i now have one dislike for mediamonkey: the next song to be played jumps the gun and starts before the one ahead of it finishes. does that make sense?

    for those mediamonkey users,
    which version do you suggest?
There's the 3.0.3 last version. Is this stable enough?

I'm an I Tunes user and wanted to try mediamonkey before switching from one to another ....

    Any suggestions??

The latest stable one is usually best, I'm running 3.0.4 now that I think of it though....
