    Hello,

If i close my notebook (close the lid), the pc goes into Sleep Mode.
but wifi and ethernet connection get disabled: how can i keep my connections while on sleep mode?

I need to leave my pc downloading over night and want to close the lid/turn off the screen
I am using Vista Home Premium.

    Thanks.

I haven't tried this myself, but just try to see if it works.

Go to Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Power Options / System Settings. Then go into "When I Close Lid" and choose "Do Nothing" for both Battery and Plugged in settings.

It might work, give it a try.

well the point is that i want to get the pc to sleep mode, meaning that it will be downloading only, and won't consume any other resources...

Exactly what resources are you worried about? Leave your computer on and let it download.

You need to leave your computer on "dreaming mode", LOL. Just like humans, computer can't do anything when they're sleeping.

Leaving the computer on and set it to power save mode will consume the least amount of resource while still being able to download things.

That's not possible. When it's downloading, it's going to be using the NIC, and the FSB, and the cpu, and the hard drives, and ....

About the only thing it's not going to be using is the screen, which you can set in the power settings so that it turns off after a certain amount of time. Set that for, say, 15 minutes, just before you go to bed, get it started doing what you want, then leave it alone; the screen should turn itself off within a short period of time.

so guys, when you leave your notebooks downloading over night/day you don't close them (close the lid)?

ps: i was thinking of closing it and putting it upside down, so that it should be cooler

You are kidding, right? Upside down?

No, you shouldn't close a laptop while it's still running - there are vents on the top and bottom that need to be clear. If you want to leave your laptop on, leave the lid open.

No, I don't. I wouldn't advise it, either. Particularly if you've got a fast download, your hard drive will be continually running, and will build up a lot of heat over time; if you have the lid closed, you've cut off one of the routes by which hot air slowly escapes the interior, and you could, overnight, cook your computer.

Putting it upside-down is just silly. If you don't have a really high-end system (i.e., one that's already at the limits of its thermal budget), and you turn the display off, you could probably get away with setting up a forced-air cooling system (e.g., a really good cooling pad, not just the cheapo special) that should keep the system within its thermal tolerances with the lid closed. Still, if you do it, the risk's all yours.

if you have a netbook, you can put it upright, turn off the cpu fan and go with passive cooling.

i do that sometimes time when I sleep while downloading at 15-20Mbps at the same time.

You should check the HP board and look around a bit - I'm sure someone has already asked about cpu/gpu monitoring apps that work with HP laptops.
