The repeat rate of my keyboard often slows down "out of no reason". I have always set the repeat rate to be the fastest and never changed it, but it would at some point become very slow. I was not doing anything unusual, just the web, word processing... What could be the cause?

No clue on the possible cause. Could you try plugging in an external keyboard, and checking whether that slowdown still happens?

Can you check the cpu ussage while you notice "at some point it became very slow". High cpu ussage sometimes lowers the repeat rate due to lack of cpu processing power.
