It is apparent i know very little about dvd playing. I have a notebook with a dual layer dvd player, and a stand alone dvd recorder and several dvd players scattered around the house. I can record tv on my standalone and watch it all the dvd players. However, if i put the dvd in my notebook dvd my dvd player doftware does not recognise the dvd. If i use windows explorer it finds the audio and video folder with the VOB files etc, which to my knowledge is how other purchased dvds appear.

Also, using DVD X Utilities i tried to copy a dvd movie to my hard drive. I copied the folders etc, but this wouldn't play either.

Perhaps i don't understand the concepts of what you can and cannot do.

    • Am i missing some important software or files i.e what file is run when you place a purchased dvd in your drive that tells the computer to play it
    • How do you record a dvd onto your hard drive to watch later, and how do you run the movie

Perhaps i need to understand the basics here - any good websites that spell it out in simple detail ?

    Thanks

some reason I don't think you have a clear concept of what's legal and what's not legal.... that or you just don't know how to keep your mouth shut about your illegal activities... in another post you bought pirated music... now you are asking for help to copy dvds.

    sigh

You can't just copy the DVD files to your computer, it's not that simple. You need to go pick up the latest edition of Mobile PC Magazine, they have a step by step on how to convert to something like Divx on your notebook. As noted, what you're trying to do is probably not legal.

    Sorry

    Point taken

Is the any way for the administrators to remove the posts

This forum has been great help to me and the last thing i want to do is get anyones back up.

I innocently assumed it was ok to do further copies of shows copied off tv for friends that did not have access to dvd recorders, or to view them on your pc (since i have seen similiar points elsewhere on this forum).

I have been having a debate with a colleague.

Is it illegal to copy a program off the TV and give it to a friend. Years ago, i recall there was some debate about whether making audio cassetes was illegal if you shared them with people but don't recall what the outcome was.

What i am talking about here is a program that is aired for children and is not available on dvd/video, but is only aired on satellite TV. Friends do not access to the program, so i was wondering whether it was legal to give them a opy, or even copy it for myself in the first place.

Surely, I have the right to copy the program to watch later. If not, why was the VCR ever invented. But, do i then have the right to share the program with others (no monetary gain).

This forum is probably not the right place, but as it has been pointed out earlier, i seem to be struggling with the concept of what is and is not illegal.

    Thanks

Doom9.org and Videohelp.com are a couple good sites.
