I bought my daughter a laptop for xmas last year and lo and behold she bunged it up and now it wont boot up and my problem is I don't know how to make a boot/recovery cd to try get it going again. Normally i'd use the software that came with it...but she has no idea where she put it. All the information Ive found on google so far is for how to make a cd presuming your laptop still works. Its a gateway ne56r09h running windows 8 if anyone is able to point me in the right direction. Thanks!

As long as there is no broken or dead hardware, you could follow these instructions from another computer to make install media of Windows 8 (or 8.1): Download Windows 8 ISO (x86 / x64) File Directly From Microsoft | Redmond Pie. You can make either a disc or USB drive to install Windows. Then you'll have to reinstall Windows and hunt down the drivers for the computer. You could also contact gateway to get the recovery media from them, but it will not be free.

Thanks for the tip but it seems like that redmond pie site just takes me to dead ends and advertisement pages.

Weird, everything is peachy for me, but it could be my ad blocker (I forget I have it). Anyways, here's the Microsoft page that will take you to the Windows 8 or 8.1 download application: Upgrade Windows with only a product key - Windows Help.
Also, finally found the NBR page about 8.1: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...ows-8-1-clean-your-windows-8-upgrade-key.html. You could try downloading Windows 8.1 directly, it should work even with a license for Windows 8.0. Should being the operative word, I've seen at least one report of someone having to install 8 then upgrade for some reason. -
Links are awesome thank you...unfortunately the first bolded sentence says to make sure im on the PC i want to upgrade.....the PC i want to upgrade is dead atm plus I dont have a product key for her laptop. I'll keep looking. Cheers!
