Check hard drive light when stuck. Is it on? If so then something is running and causing that stoppage. What size of storage drive? SSD or hard drive? Did you install something last week? Are you using a anti-virus program?

I don't have win8 but you should be able to find out what is running. In win 7 it's rt mouse on task bar and Click the "Task Manager" option. You can look there to see if any odd program is running. Some virus's mask themselves so that they do not show up there.

And this: Bring up the Windows Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab. Click on the CPU table heading so that the processes are sorted by CPU usage (you might have to do this twice so that it's sorted in descending order). Now whenever a process kicks in, it will shoot to the top of the list, and you can see what corresponds to the disk hits. Then Google the process name to find out more.
