    I'll keep it short...

    Desktop - XP home
    Laptop - XP Pro x86
    Router - netgear dg834pn

Desktop plugged into router, 360 pluggged into router I can stream video fine.

Laptop plugged into router, 360 plugged into router I cannot stream video.

Theres nothing in the router settings I can see that would allow the dekstop to work and the laptop not to.

So... I'm guessing its a setting in windows thats different?

When ever i redo my pc i usually have some problems too, I use vista tho. I'll just tell you what i normally have to change to get mine back to normal working order. First i share the drive, then Under control panel in network settings sometimes i have to switch from private network to a public network. (While in a private network you cant select media sharing in windows media player it will be grayed out). Once you do that turn on media sharing in control panel, and go into windows media player and click library media sharing and check the box and share the media to your xbox 360, it should be there in the list if its on. Make sure password sharing is off, and after that i can usually get it to work. I wouldn't recommend doing all that if you don't have a router password tho.

Just a quick question, you say you cant stream video, can you stream audio fine on both?

Using WMP, I will try VLC later.
WMP does recognise the xbox when using the laptop so it seems to work one way just not the other.

J-dogg, thanks for telling me how you do yours, different on xp though so won't be much help.

I'll also try the audio and see what happens, but on the xbox if I go to pc settings it will come up with 'pc not found/selected' so can't see the audio working?

Once I get the laptop streaming, theres gonna be a 'part 2' but that involves using two routers so will post that in the networking section.

I often do that, type a post out forget to press submit, then go off for 10mins come back and someone else has posted.

Anyway, quick update. I removed the two xbox things in wmp media sharing box, turned off media sharing and then turn it back on and the 360 came up with an exclamation mark, so allowed that but and then something else popped up about media sharing, the icon is like an external hdd with a litte music and video pic next to it, its an unknown device but must have something to do with the 360?

Also after faffing around with the router and opening some ports and other stuff, I restored the router settings from a saved file and now it works fine.

The first video I tried said it lost connection but that happened too when using the desktop, the other 5 or so vids and songs I played were fine.

The video/music stream ok with the windows firewall but with sygate it doens't work, so looks like I have to add some ports to it.

    Next step, two routers......

EDIT: just changed linksys wrt54gl with tomato firmware from client mode to wireless bridge and now streaming! whoop.
