I know the full katakana & hiragana alphabet by heart but not too much kanji.

I learned everything I know from this: http://www.thejapanesepage.com/

They changed up alot since I used it but the part I used is now under "lessons" --> beginners and learn the hiragana & katakana alphabets. From there I started reading Japanese comic books like jump because they give you "subtitles" for the kanji (break it down into hiragana so you can pronouce it) between that and the use of this page:

http://jisho.org/ (from denshi jisho literly translated electronic dictionary) the best online dictionary I have ever seen. I go thru and translate word for word comic books and thats how I learn my kanji. Also comic books have about some of the most simple grammer and words so its a good place to start and can be fun at the same time.

I found my method 100x better than any software. I have Rosseta Stone supposedly the best language software out there and it just doesn't work for me.

Also I used to watch alot of Japanese anime so that helps alot :p

I also have Japanese IME installed on my computers so I can talk in Japanese online and used to play FFXI and PSO with JP players often.

I will be flat honest with you tho, with how good I was in speaking and reading Japanese I am not that good anymore because I simply never use it, I work in the hotel business and only 2 or 3 times a year do I meet a Japanese speaking guest. I love the culture, the language, the art, looks, you name it I am more Asian at heart than any of my native Asian friends but taking so much time and effort to learn Japanese really did me no good in the end. If I had put that effort into Spanish instead I could increase my chances for a job and make my life much easier with the massive amount of Spanish speaking guest we get. Heck I see many many more Chinese speaking guest than Japanese. So unless you plan to live somewhere where others speak Japanese I just cant see much use for it, and if you did move somewhere like that you would end up learning it from those around you easier than anything else.

Don't bother with Rosetta Stone. It's a bunch of overpriced crap that doesn't work (for me atleast). I'd suggest start with basic books and whatnot.

Here is a great guide. If you are a highschool student graduating or a university student pick up hiragana and katagana then look up ICU Summer courses in Japanese. You have to be a university studnet over 18 so if your in highschool you have more time to get ready. around 2300$ plus plane cost
